Ian's Yoga Bio

Ian came to first came to yoga in 1988 seeking a gentle means of non-competitive of exercise. Yoga met his needs for healthy physical practice without the humiliations he had encoutered in sport due to childhood obesity and poor hand eye co-ordination.

Over the following years Ian noticed that there were many beneficial changes in both bodily fitness and outlook gained though the practice of simple yoga asana. After a brief introduction to ashtanga Ian was inspired to learn more from one of the then few teachers in europe so he traveled to Crete to study for some months in 1991 at the Practice Place under the instruction of the now late Derek Ireland.

His experiencies in Crete lead Ian to explore some Viniyoga instruction from Paul Harvey and also some ashtanga with Manju Jois prior to his first visit to the source of ashtanga vinyasa Mysore in 1994 to study with Sri K.Pattabhi Jois. There Ian met Rolf Naujoket and subsequently studied for several with Rolf at his goa style classes near disco valley as a prelude to Mysore on several visits to India.

Ian has now spent a total of more than five years yoga study in Mysore under the direction of BNS Iyengar at the Patanjala Yogashala. There in addition to primary and intermediate asana he has recieved instruction in the practices of pranayama, mudra, kria and meditation. He has undergone yogic initiation by mantra granted by the Swami of Parakala Mutt as well as teacher training from BNS Iyengar in vinyasa krama and the safe and efficient ajustment of postures.
